A dreamlike natural spectacle

The larger of the two New Zealand islands is scenically spectacular and therefore one of the favorite destinations of the two travel bloggers Romeo and Kathi. One natural highlight chases the next: fjords, glaciers, mountains and much more. They introduce you to some of their highlights.

1. Castle Hill

We started our journey in Christchurch. From there, Castle Hill is the perfect day trip (1.5h drive). The bizarre limestone rock formations are reminiscent of a castle complex, hence the name. There we were offered fascinating visions, which we could look at and enjoy for hours.

2. Mount Cook

Pretty much in the centre of the island, between Christchurch and Queenstown, the village of Tekapo is located on the lake of the same name. Turquoise blue water in a barren landscape with a majestic mountain scenery – breathtaking! By the way, the best view of the lake is from Mount John Observatory.

3. Dunedin

The Scottish town of Dunedin is the perfect starting point to explore the scenic Otago Peninsula. The city itself has above all a great flair and an impressive railway station. Tip: the nearby Tunnel Beach with its cliffs and rugged coastline.

The Catlins

About an hour south of Dunedin begins the pristine and secluded region of Catlins. Here the focus is on nature: harsh climate, strong swell, rugged coastal landscape and many seals and penguins. A great photo spot is the lighthouse at Nugget Point!
